| Hello from St. Maarten!!! |
 |
Hola guys! Well I'm not sure who all knew about our planned trip to the Caribbean this year...but...we're here!!
86 and balmy every day, occasional thundershowers...beautiful coral beaches and the friendliest people I've ever met...lovely! The island is co-habitated by the French and the Dutch (Netherlands).
I will take some time next visit to fill you in on what is upcoming...but here are some snippets.
Got here on Friday Evening, went straight to the hotel and got ourselves something to eat at the local bar at the resort.
Saturday got a rental car (a jeep) and took a tour of the island....with stops it took us all of two hours...LOL! Saw a lot of beautiful scenery and beaches...oceans just slightly darker than Cabal's eyes...Stopped at a place called Orient Beach for lunch and got our first taste of "French" Morals...they are very liberal...evidently Orient beach is Clothing optional...heh...
Had dinner that night at a Jamaican place called "the Jerk" if you ever come here and want some good jerked pork or chicken I highly recommend it! Tonight we're going down the street to the "Greenhouse" to eat.
Today we went horseback riding...I will HAVE to upload picture but we went for an hour and a half ride and then SWAM the horses in the ocean! Then included in the cost of the ride they fed us BBQ ribs, potato salad, salad and french fries...MMMMMM!!!
While riding we found a beach that we thought might be good for snorkeling and came back to it...it wasn't QUITE as nice as it looked from above the waves but we did see a 4 ft ray and a tarpon as long as me!
More to come later! I'll probably be on again tomorrow. Maybe...HEE! It's free!!

Hi guys....
Nyna, it's hot and balmy here too...I'm sure it's not quite the same though...
So far we're having a great time. Today was the first of three dive trips.
First dive was a 50 ft dive down to a wreck, pretty cool lots of fish...the highlight was the barracuda and the Eagle ray that stopped in to take a visit.
Second dive was pretty cool too about three wrecked ships an a sunken piece of the old Simpson Bay bridge...The highlight this trip was Daughtersan losing her weight-belt, not once, but twice. She managed not to panic about it, but it did shorten her and our dive a bit as she sucked through her air a lot faster than expected. Overall a really good time...Tonight it is a bbq diner at the room and probably a little bit of time to wind down and relax...We've been pretty much going non stop for two days straight!
Tomorrow we don't really have a lot planned...might go back up to one of the northern beaches for sun and snorkeling, but beyond that I have no idea! LOL!
That's it for now peeps...take care another update soon!

Sorry about the long delay there, I lost track of time and things went a little TOO quickly! LMAO!
So where did I leave off...
Tuesday we didn't do a whole lot...came down from the fun and packed first full day of activities...
Wednesday we went back to Orient Beach for sun and fun...and yes it was fun...
Unfortunately I got SUNBURNED! Well I get sunburned all the time, but this time it was the tops of my feet!! BLEH...
I still went out that evening on a dinner cruise on a large Catamaran. Taylor was able to get liquored up a bit (there is no age limit for drinking on St. Maarten...they were more than happy to serve her rum punch all night) She only had two, but she's not used to drinking so she was quite entertaining! Good food, great music, better company, and DANCING...I got to dance with two different hands on board...both of whom complimented my prowess, even when Caribbean dances aren't my forte...I blend well when I have to! Michelle got to dance with them too, and had a wonderful time.
My feet however swelled so badly that putting shoes on was NOT an option...so bad that I begged out of the night dive the following day. It literally hurt to walk, especially if I left them elevated for any length of time. I found that continuing to walk was more comfortable that lying down with my feet up and then trying to get somewhere...Heh.
Hubby and Taylor ended up going diving without me, while I stayed in the room. I drew, wrote, got bored, walked the beach, put my aching feet in the ocean, looked for any kind of sea life I could, and then headed back for the room. The other problem presented itself when their trip took longer than expected (they didn't come back until nearly nine at night) and none of us had eaten dinner...we were STARVING!! We ended up at "The Boathouse" at about nine thirty, expecting that we were going to get turned away. LOL. Didn't happen and we had a lovely seafood dinner.
Friday was our day to dive with the sharks, and I MADE myself go...sore feet and all...Luckily there wasn't a whole lot of actual kicking and swimming involved so I didn't irritate the dogs too much.
The shark dive was AWESOME! They took us to a sandy area between several reef heads, and the sharks were already waiting, as if they had a calender and knew it was the second feeding day in the week. We were treated to Gray Caribbean Reef Sharks ranging from about four to nine foot long. We started with four of them and ended up having seven swimming about. The closest one got to me was about two inches, only to be chased off by a four inch long fish known as a "Sargent Major" protecting it's territory...funny stuff!
The guy in charge of feeding did an awesome job at it, feeding out where every one could see (there were about 12 of us), and it was amazing how easily the sharks discerned between the fish being offered compared to an empty feeding stick or an extended hand - there wasn't a single instance where the sharks seemed to threaten the feeder or us. It was a wonderful experience...and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was VERY Tempting to reach out and touch a shark, even when we were warned not to. Sigh....
That evening we changed our plans about three times for dinner and ended up going to a place we read about on our first day...Yvettes...Classic Creole and Island food. I had Conch and Dumplings. Taylor had Creole Ox tail (yummy)...and Scott had the Creole stew platter. INEXPENSIVE...it was probably the cheapest meal we had other than that trip to Burger King for Lunch.
All told the trip probably cost us upwards of $2500...but it's not a trip I will ever regret taking! I had a wonderful time!
The week was way too short, and the nearly eleven hours traveling I hadn't looked forward too from the beginning!
It's good to be home though! I've missed everyone!
